The Red Dot Award is of the more desirable "good design" awards out there. Emphasis is always on form and function. You'll

find that most award recipients are often excellent selling products. The award is given by the Design Zentrum Nordheim

Westfalen in Germany. This year two Tag Heuer watches received Red Dot Awards, and this is the fifth time in seven years that

Tag Heuer watches received such Red Dot Awards for good product designs.

The two watches that received the award are the new Tag Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 36 and the new Tag Heuer Aquaracer 500M

with the Calibre 5 movement. The Grand Carrera Calibre 36 is an odd watch with a sound design concept for measuring 1/10 of a

second accuracy in its chronograph complication - in a unique manner. The best way to appreciate it is to view the video

here. It is a cool concept, but isn't going to be a high volume seller like the Aquaracer 500M.

The new Aquaracer model is very well done - really advancing the concept of a "professional diver watch" for Tag Heuer. You

Ever since the new Calibre 5 movement based Tag Heuer Aquaracer watches came out I knew that they were going to be a big hit.

Now, after Tag Heuer has penetrated the market with loads of marketing many of us many not yet have seen any of the actual

pieces. The new Aquaracer watches look nothing like the previous line, which is a good or bad thing depending on how you see

it. Well, there are SOME similarities. In fact, Tag Heuer still makes both lines, calling the new one the Aquaracer 500m. I

think it is interesting when a company replaces an old model with something else, but still makes the old model. I've always

appreciated how the new line is both aggressive and stylish - as well as durable enough to serious diving needs.

Seen below is the highest end model in the line with the gold toned bezel. I believe the bezel insert is solid 18k gold.

Other models have black or blue bezels, and there is also a silver or orange dialed version. Like most popular Tag Heuer

timepieces the watch is available with a Swiss quartz movement or a Swiss ETA automatic movement (Tag Heuer re-brands them to Tag Heuer watch

things like the "Calibre 5"). They certainly make you think before getting the model you want. The automatic versions of the

watches are over $600 more than the quartz models. The difference in price doesn't need to be that much - but it is true that

Tag Heuer is the type of brand that attracts hardcore watch lovers, and those who don't know the difference between a

mechanical and quartz movement.

The interesting screws all over the case help emphasis the tool like function of the watch having more water resistance. I

like both the rubber straps and metal bracelets equally. More than a few times playing with the watch I have been tempted to

I'll take this watch please. Literally I want to sign for it right now. I've always been a big fan of Tag Heuer Formula 1

watches, and this latest iteration goes right back to the simplistic good looks that made this line of timepieces so

incredibly desirable for me. While the watch is considered part of Tag Heuer's entry level line, the quality of the watch has

been going up - to the point where, yes, it is more expensive, but all that much more desirable (still under $1000 though).

For instance, the classic plastic bezel has been replaced with a titanium carbide-coated steel bezel. Nice! The major

functional improvement here is that the prominent bezel is not scratch resistant, while with the old plastic bezel it was

basically guaranteed that you had to replace it every once in a while. The Tag Heuer watch new steel bezel has raised minute indicators,

which are more than just "painted on."

What is really nice about this version of the new Formula 1 is the clean but attractive face that is very pleasing to look at

and use. See the image of another new for 2009 Tag Heuer Formula 1 watch, the Grande Date Chronograph. This watch just feels

so cluttered and contradictory to the point of this timepiece. Sure it looks cool, but I wouldn't want to live with it each

day. The Formula 1 Grande Date has a large subsidiary seconds dial with an integrated big date. It is hard to see the big

date in the images (how ironic), but it is at the 6 o'clock position. The hands on the face are totally new for the watch

line, and I think I like them. The best part of the dial are the raised hour numerals and indexes. They have a rich amount of

Superluminova so that they will glow. This of course is on the black faced model. The white faced model is basically all

The 44mm wide watch case has the same soft look that made the original Formula 1 watch so popular. This is the poster-child

of why a lug-less look works. The satin finished steel case works nicely against the black colored bezel, and the Tag Heuer

"Easy Grip" crown looks like a breeze to operate (screw-down of course). The crystal is sapphire, while the watch is water

resistant to 200 meters.

Two strap options are available for this watch. A textured rubber strap or the classic looking metal bracelet which is a

great hybrid between a jubilee bracelet, and what you'd find on a Rolex Submariner. See what I mean? Inside the watch is

quartz movement, which this series has always had. Yea, I prefer mechanical movements, but for some reason this watch just

seems more suited to having a high quality quartz, so I am not disappointed there - and again, for the price it will be a

good deal. My choice is going to be the black dial with the metal bracelet, and I will likely end up getting one when they
